まわる【回る】

1 〔輪を描く〕 run in a circle; 〔回転する〕 rotate; revolve; turn; spin.

●ぐるぐる回る circle round and round; wheel; run in circles.

●地球は太陽のまわりを回っている. The Earth revolves about the Sun.

・かぎがカチャリと回った. With a click the key turned in the lock.

・回れ! 回れ! 〔野球の走者に〕 Run!

・扇風機が回っている. The electric fan was spinning.

・プロペラが回り始めた. The propeller started to rotate.

・スケーターは独楽(_こま)のように回った. The skater spun like a top.

・ランナーは 2 塁を回ったところで止まった. After turning second the runner held up.

・デパートを回っていて遅くなった. I was late because I stopped at the department store.

5 〔場所を移る〕 go [come] around 《to another place》; 〔立場を変える〕 go over [come around] 《to another point of view》.

8 〔行き渡る〕 extend over; 〔届く〕 reach.

●警察の手が回る the long hand of the law reaches out

・指先が背中まで回る one's fingertips reach around to one's back.

●連絡は私のところにも回ってきた. The announcement came around to me.

・すっかり酔いが回った. I became completely drunk.

・火はすでに居間に回っていた. The fire had already reached the living room.

・その仕事までは手が回らない. I'm afraid that job is more than I can handle.

9 〔ある時刻を過ぎる〕 turn 《five》.

●時刻は正午を回った. It has turned twelve noon.

・10 時を 5 分ほど回ったところだ. It's five past ten.

10 〔利息がつく〕 earn interest.

●この債券は年 3 パーセントで回る. This bond earns three-percent interest annually.
